Building parent trust through authentic engagement
A strategic guide for school principals and community engagement teams
In an era defined by scepticism where trust in traditional institutions is declining. Schools, however remain as a trusted institution for many communities.
That doesn’t mean, however, that schools can’t strategically adapt their approach to parental engagement. Consumers at large are moving away from passive reliance on the brands and are seeking direct, human connection. This shift is giving rise to a Personality Premium, where the authentic, relatable human element of a school and it’s leadership is the new currency of trust.
For school leaders, the challenge is clear: how do we translate this need for genuine connection into effective, trust-building engagement?
Integrity is non-negotiable
Just as in the corporate world, personality cannot earn a premium without a baseline of integrity. For a school, this means establishing unwavering foundational trust:
- Trust in the Organisation (the School itself): Parents must trust the daily operations, safety protocols, and pedagogical methods.
- Reputation of the Organisation: The school’s public reputation must be consistent with the lived experience of its families.
The essential characteristics parents look for in a community relationship are Authenticity (60%), Consistency (58%), and Transparency (55%). These are the floor of engagement. A failure here—inconsistent communication, opaque decision-making—will immediately nullify any efforts to build a meaningful personality connection.
Shifting trust
The most profound shift lies in the demand for the human story. Parents are not just entrusting their children to a building or a curriculum; they are entrusting them to people. For just over half of Australians (56%), trusting the organisation’s leader is extremely or very important to their decision to engage. This is especially true for the next generation of parents with Gen Z parents being 1.8 times more likely than older generations to see knowing the story and values of an organisation’s leader as critical.
School leaders must move from a primarily administrative role to a visible, human leader. Trust is built when parents feel they know the schools ‘why’, the core values and personal passion that drives the school’s mission. Generic, corporate-sounding messages must be replaced with personal, value-driven communication.
Strategies for cultivating the school’s personality premium:
- Humanise Communications: Move beyond generic email blasts. Consider video messages from the Principal that share a personal reflection on the school week, or short, authentic social media posts that highlight staff passion (e.g., a teacher sharing why they love teaching a specific topic).
- Visible Leadership: Create intentional, opportunities for the Principal and leadership team to connect with parents – not just at formal events, but during morning drop-offs or afternoon pickups. This physical presence reinforces the human face of the institution.
- Encourage Staff Agency: The school’s personality is the sum of its people. Empower teachers and staff to share their passion and expertise authentically, making them visible partners in the child’s education. This decentralises trust from the single figure of the Principal to the entire, engaged staff community.
