The most asked questions in Australia according to Google search suggestions

In 1902 Rudyard Kipling wrote his “Six Honest Friends” ditty:

“I keep six honest serving-men
(They taught me all I knew);
Their names are What and Why and When
And How and Where and Who.”

So 110 years later we sent the six honest friends to Google for answers, and they brought back the top search suggestions, based on the most searched questions, which gives us an analysis of the most asked questions Australians have:


What is…


  • What is my ip?
    (The numbers that make up your internet “address”)
  • What is gangnam style?
    (A K-Pop music video YouTube sensation)
  • What is permeate?
    (The stuff milk is now “free” of)
  • What is love?
    (A song, a YouTube video and a bunch of blogs apparently)

Why is…


  • Why is the sky blue?
    (Simple question, technical answers)
  • Why is my internet so slow?
    (Blame usage quotas, filters, modems & your neighbours)
  • Why is the ocean salty?
    (Salt, from dissolved minerals made it thus)
  • Why is Pluto not a planet?
    (Because the people who said it was in 1930 now say it’s not)

When is…


  • When is daylight savings?
    (October until 7 April 2013)
  • When is Fathers’ Day?
    (1st Sunday in September, but June in the USA)
  • When is Halloween?
    (last day in October)
  • When is Easter 2013
    (Sunday 31 March 2013)

How is…


  • How is coal formed?
    (Plants + a long time)
  • How is gold formed?
    (No mention of bankers and money)
  • How is babby formed?
    (Originally a typo, now a cartoon, a meme, and an internet hit)
  • How is honey made?
    (Science gives answers, but it’s still amazing!)

Where is…


  • Where is Chuck Norris?
    (A Google joke: type the question & click the “I’m feeling lucky” button)
  • Where is Honey Boo Boo from?
    (A US “Toddlers & Tiaras” baby pageant star)
  • Where is NSW?
    (It’s not lost, and more than 7 million of us live in it!)
  • Where is my iPhone?
    (A lot of misplaced phones, and lots of apps to help find them)

  • Who is gossip girl?
    (the central character in a New York based book series and TV series)
  • Who is Julian Assange?
    (Wikileaks was a big story and its founder has become a bigger one)
  • Who is the stig?
    (the white helmet-wearing, lap time-setting driver in Top Gear, outed as Ben Collins)
  • Who is Kony?
    (Kony 2012 video set Youtube records highlighting the crimes of Joseph Kony in Uganda)
