The 2026 Australian Census from a demographer’s perspective

What demographers are looking out for ahead of the 2026 Census:

• For the first time, the Census will include an optional question on sexual orientation and gender for those aged 16 and over.
• Dementia is now the leading cause of death for Australians, prompting researchers to track how long-term health profiles will shift from the 2021 focus on mental health.

The National Snapshot

With the national population moving towards 29 million, this year’s Census will provide a vital snapshot of a nation navigating new social, economic, and technological frontiers. Households will begin receiving digital Census forms directly to their inboxes in late July, moving away from traditional paper distribution. This data is not just for statisticians; it informs how governments and businesses allocate funding and plan essential infrastructure.

Demographic Milestones

The data will reveal the long-term impacts of a post-lockdown Australia. The 2021 Census captured unique pandemic-era insights , including a massive spike in working from home and a noticeable dip in volunteering. Demographers are eager to see if these behaviours have shifted. The data also uncovers cultural and demographic shifts: the fast-growing Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander population surged from 650,000 in 2016 to 813,000 in 2021. It will also be telling to see how many Australians choose to answer the new optional questions on gender and sexual orientation, much like the religion question. 

Health Tracking

In 2021, mental health emerged as the most prevalent long-term health condition. Dementia is now the leading cause of death. Given the task of analysing over 10 million households, the Australian Bureau of Statistics will stagger the data release, beginning with key demographic insights in June 2027 and continuing into 2028.
