A third of Australians are looking forward to Christmas more this year than in previous years

After a stressful year, more than a third (36%) of Australians say they are looking forward to Christmas more this year than in previous years. For more than two in five (42%), their Christmas decorations have been put up earlier than in previous years. After the year we’ve all been through, it’s not hard to see why Aussies are seeking to celebrate Christmas earlier this year than in previous years. From putting up decorations early to enjoying the Christmas lights and family time, Aussies are ready to celebrate with those they may not have been able to see in 2021.

Australians are also looking forward to spending time with family this Christmas (88%) and going to see the Christmas lights in their local community (75%). Even though the next year may pose some sustained challenges, Aussies are hopeful with 77% saying they are optimistic about 2022.

Christmas can be a tough time for some

While Australians are looking forward to spending time with family this Christmas, more than two in five (46%) say Christmas can be a tough time for them. It’s great to see, especially after the last two years and the trials they have brought, that Australians aren’t just looking out for themselves, but that more than half (52%) say they will invite those who don’t have anyone at this time of year to join in on their celebrations. This shows that the qualities of mateship and caring for others are still strong in the Australian psyche.

Four in five think Christmas has become too commercialised

Four in five Australians (81%) say they are supportive of the religious traditions and symbols of Christmas and 80% agree that Christmas has become too commercialised. This is perhaps why 44% say they don’t hesitate to re-gift presents they don’t like!
